Be Ye Holy
Scripture Reference: “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” – 1 Peter 1:15-16
The Call to Holiness
From the moment we are saved, God calls us to a life of holiness. Holiness means being set apart for God’s purposes—living in a way that reflects His character and brings Him glory. As Apostolic believers, we understand that holiness isn’t optional; it’s a command. Peter draws from Leviticus when he reminds us, “Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
This command challenges us to examine our lives. Are we living in a way that is pleasing to God? Holiness is not confined to a Sunday morning worship service. It is about how we live daily, in our actions, words, thoughts, and decisions. Peter specifies that holiness should encompass “all manner of conversation,” meaning every part of our conduct must be influenced by our identity as God’s people.
Holiness in Spirit and Lifestyle
Holiness starts in the heart. Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). A heart aligned with God’s will is the foundation of a holy life. But true holiness cannot remain hidden; it will manifest outwardly.
The Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 12:1 to “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Our choices about what we say, wear, watch, or participate in should reflect our dedication to God. Holiness is not about legalism but relationship—choosing to honor God in all areas of life because we love Him.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
Living a holy life is impossible in our own strength. Our flesh battles against God’s will, but the Holy Spirit empowers us to overcome. Galatians 5:16 says, “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
The Holy Spirit helps us grow in holiness by convicting us of sin, guiding us into truth, and enabling us to live righteously. When we yield to the Spirit, we can live in victory over sin and fulfill God’s call to holiness. It’s a daily process of surrender and transformation.
Holiness as a Witness
Our lives should testify to the holiness of God. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Holiness is not about drawing attention to ourselves but pointing others to Christ. When we live differently—avoiding gossip, forgiving others, showing kindness, and standing for truth—people notice.
Holiness also creates a clear boundary between the Church and the world. As Peter writes in 1 Peter 2:9, “Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.” Our distinctiveness as God’s people should attract others to the Kingdom.
Reflection
Are there areas of your life where God is calling you to deeper holiness?
How can you rely on the Holy Spirit to guide you in this process?
What changes in your lifestyle could reflect your identity as God’s chosen people?
Prayer
Lord, You have called us to be holy because You are holy. Teach us to reflect Your character in every part of our lives. Help us to walk in holiness, empowered by Your Spirit, and let our lives be a light that draws others to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
